Wildlife corridors, usually located on the edges of major thoroughfares, play a vital role in maintaining and enhancing biodiversity across the district.
The development of these areas began after the Chorley Council declared a climate emergency in 2019 and decided to let nature take its course with a helping hand.
These wildlife corridors are maintained and expanded by the community’s Streetscene team, who mow only a narrow strip of the roadside lane where it is necessary for motorists’ safety (instead of the whole shoulder lane) and allow the rest to thrive. Onions are often planted as a supplement.

Coun Mark Clifford, Chorley Council’s Environment and Green Spaces Champion, said, “These areas are critical to our ecological processes. They provide a number of benefits, such as habitats and access to food for our wildlife and pollinators, and increase biodiversity. We must continue to do everything we can to help these areas. ”
In addition to these, Chorley Council have planted over 40 mini wildflower meadows across the district that are currently in full bloom, providing habitat and food for a wide variety of insects and pollinators.
