Because at the age of 77, Peter, a former high sheriff and current Deputy Lieutenant of Lancashire, has just entered competitions and won his first victory
Powerlifting competition.
In the Masters 4 category of the event at Ashton’s Fitcess Gym, Peter encountered three white lights, which meant he got a good lift on every squat and bench

He used the presses and deadlifts to set personal bests in the trio, to take victory and to put himself in the frame for a shot at the British Championships
Additionally, Peter raised £ 3,217 for the Rosemere Cancer Foundation from family and friends who sponsored him for gold.
Peter, Honorary Fellow of the University of Central Lancashire, who received his OBE in 2016 for his services to Lancashire, said: “The pandemic
has influenced charities across the UK, but the great supporters of the Rosemere Cancer Foundation have gone above and beyond in their efforts to create new ones
and unique opportunities to raise vital funds to support local cancer patients.
“Taking inspiration from them, I wanted to find my own way to raise much-needed funds and recently signed up for a gym to keep fit and
healthy, I came across a newfound skill for weightlifting.
“I certainly didn’t expect to be in a weightlifting competition at my age, but I train at Fitcess and have received a lot of encouragement from me
Coach Tom, who always thought that I had a great chance of winning and definitely put myself through my paces. “
Peter took over the presidency of the Rosemere Cancer Foundation in 2018, a year after losing his beloved wife Shelagh to cancer and
supported the charity 20 years earlier as Marketing Director of what is now Sika Preston with the name Rosemere.
He added: “I would like to thank everyone who has supported me. Your sponsorship was an additional motivation in my efforts to literally raise the bar! “
Peter’s supporters included his daughters, lawyer Charlotte, who lives in Poulton-le-Fylde and is the mother of his grandson Tom, 14, and Caroline, who
lives in London, works for Google and is the mother of his granddaughter Scarlett (four).
The Rosemere Cancer Foundation works to provide world-class cancer treatments and services to cancer patients from across Lancashire and South
Cumbria is treated at the Rosemere Cancer Center, the area’s specialist cancer treatment and radiation therapy center at Royal Preston Hospital, and
also in eight other local hospital cancer departments in the two counties.
