Lancashire County Council has established a program based around caring for the vulnerable, protecting the environment and doing volunteer and community work.

It involves giving small grants to community, volunteer and faith groups in an initiative called the Local Member Grants Scheme.

Each district council receives an annual budget to fund groups in its area.

These grants can fund anything from toys and books to computer tablets or field trips.

Each councilor will initially have a budget of £500 to cover grants awarded from January to March 2022.

An annual budget of £2,000 will be introduced in April 2022.

Grants range from £100 upwards and go towards specific projects that benefit the community. They cannot be used to cover running costs.

Applications are reviewed by each district council and must fit with the council’s priorities, specifically ‘Caring for the Vulnerable’ and ‘Protecting the Environment’.

County Councilor Phillippa Williamson, leader of Lancashire County Council, said:

“Volunteers, community and faith groups are doing tremendous work that is really making a difference in people’s lives.

“Volunteers work tirelessly, running programs from knitting and chat sessions and gardening groups to after-school activities to help kids stay active.

“We know that a small donation can make a big difference, so we’ve reintroduced these small grants to help groups with projects that bring real benefit to their community, whether that’s buying computer tablets to help young people , or buy chess sets for playgroups.

“Our district councils know their areas inside out and they will have a say in which groups receive the funds.

“These grants will help groups continue their important work at the heart of communities across Lancashire.”

Although larger charities and organizations are welcome to apply, this program is primarily aimed at groups with fewer resources who may find it daunting or difficult to apply for grants.
